I get asked all the time, why did you start making candles?

I was a designer by trade up until the launch of Keynvor in 2019. It was my passion and how I earned a living. However, the reality of doing this day in and day out, both freelance and corporate, meant long days staring at an Apple Mac screen and tight deadlines, all at the same time as having to constantly be ‘creative’. We now know creativity can only happen when the mind is in a state of play.

Cornwall isn’t a place that lends itself to a busy lifestyle easily, so rather than push against the system, I opened my mind to how I could use my skills in another way. In 2017, I received a luxury candle as a Christmas present. Now, before I get into the ‘how did this all happen’, I want to add that I was well aware of my senses and how smells directly correlate to nostalgia and experience. This is what I am interested in. It gets much deeper than this; as a fragrance and brand designer, I’m pleased to say receiving that candle opened a doorway I just had to step through.

The intrigue of fragrance and packaging design grabbed me! It allowed design to be much more than solving a brief and making things look pretty. There is now another way to connect.

Candle making is a freedom. A chance to experiment and refine a product until it is perfect.

My day-to-day now looks a lot different than it did in the past. Keynvor has grown over the years, and many lessons have been learned, but still at the core of this business, creativity and connection are what drive Keynvor forward. Taking the surrounding landscapes into account and translating them into a fragrance experience is now a passion; as cringe as that sounds, it really is.

Attention to detail is at the forefront of this business, and bolsters the ‘why’. Why do we make candles? Well, because they are pieces of intricate design that can transport you to the past, or anchor you to a moment. That is magical. We can create a product that can somehow feel as though it was created especially for you.

Now, I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful team of creatives by my side who help this candle studio constantly evolve.
